Our faith and everything that surrounds this, all comes from God.
Our Gifts from God
I think at times we may forget this We are told quite often in homilies and teaching that all things come from God and that we are to be stewards of the gifts he gives us. We take for granted our faith though.
Faith also is a gift. And I imagine we can each think of someone in our lives who refuse to think about God or won’t consider God as being part of a solution. The question we may ask is why won’t God give this person faith??? The real question is why won’t this person accept it??
God is pouring out gifts all the time to his children. We need practice in accepting our faith. When you think about it, each of us make little acts of faith each day. We turn on the light switch and the lights go on. We turn on the oven and the heat starts…
We learn about faith as a child
These types of things we are taking on faith. We would get very confused if the water started when we flipped the light switch.
Perhaps, these types of things help us as we are young to be open to faith. We also have faith in our Moms and Dads when they told us that going to Church on Sunday was important. Over time they had learned the importance of faith in God and all the good that it does for them.
Also over time we as children learned how important God is to people in our lives. All of those little times when you got that “ahah” moment when you learned someone else’s love of God and you learned a bit more perhaps about yourself.
I remember when I was a teenager, a particularly bad part of my teenage years, I and a friend were making fun of the fantastical descriptions of things in the Book of Revelation.
My father exploded hearing his son disrespect Scripture. I had no idea he felt so strong about this… and obviously this lesson of his sticks with me to this very day.
The Process we go through
We have a calling to be near God in our hearts. This is a lesson which Jesus shows us today in the Gospel. Jesus is showing his disciples, but today also showing each one of us that we don’t need to overthink things. We do not have to make things complicated. We should look to God and learn about Him in the way we looked to our parents with awe and trust.
I remember somewhere I saw a picture of a little child staring at a caterpillar on a blade of grass… Her look of amazement at being so close to an animal. And seeing so many legs, just there eating. There was a smile on her face of new discovery.
So she saw this amazing thing… so she knew such a thing existed and was real. In school, she heard about new things and took it on faith that the teacher gave her good information… and later on that day she would speak of it with her parents and find out that what she heard was indeed good information. She never actually saw this new thing, but in effect after doing research she learned it was true.
We learn faith as we mature
This is how we learn about the physical world. Would our spiritual education be any different??? There are no mathematical formulas, no scientific research. But we certainly know it is there. Our hearts know it is there. We are here because that faith is here.
When we become close to God, we become inflamed with love and peace. That is why we should at every possible opportunity seek out God where we can. Praying to Him, going to Adoration when it is available is an amazing way to become close to God.
Jesus shows us faith
But momentarily we will be as close as we can to God… in the Eucharist. We will not get closer to God. We will say Amen to all the things which have been proclaimed by the Church for all time.
Jesus says Kings and Prophets had been waiting to see Him and to hear Him.
- God, humbled himself to be amongst us.
- He sacrificed himself to redeem us.
- He gave us the Eucharist as the true way He and each of us can be together.
The reason why the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Mass is that we are fulfilled. He has revealed this truth to us. Our faith gives us this truth
